Obituary for Bennie James Gambill

Bennie James Gambill, 83, of Piggott passed away Friday, February 8, 2019, at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House. He was born on March 3, 1935, in his maternal grandparents home in the hills north of Jonesboro to Aaron and Grace (Tolbert) Gambill.

He was a member of Lunsford Baptist Church.

Bennie attended Jonesboro Public School and was a proud member of the class of 1954. It was during this time that he discovered his love for all things sports related. This became a lifelong joy that took him from the company leagues of the 1950's at Singer in Trumann as a player and coach to the early days of the Jonesboro summer baseball program as a coach, groundskeeper, umpire, and finally manager. After graduating from ASU with a degree in Education, he coached and taught in Northeast Arkansas. Upon retirement he moved to Cherokee Village to be able to continue to enjoy sports chasing golf balls. Through all of this he made many friends and influenced the lives of many young people and for that he was grateful.

He is survived by his only child, Learon, and her husband Tucker Myers of Piggott and Learon's mother, Lynnda Cannon, of Jonesboro and his younger brother, Tom, and several nieces and nephews and their children. He was preceded in death by his parents and older brother, Leon.

Bennie was buried in a private family service, his spirit has been released to go in peace, go in kindness, go in love, and go in faith. In lieu of flowers, the family requests you remember him with donations to the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House. He would be most pleased to know that you took the time to hit a ball, throw a pass, fish, or hunt with a child and remember him.

Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home of Piggott, Arkansas, was in charge of the arrangements.
