Obituary for James Mowery

James Clifford Mowery passed away on September 6, 2018. He was born March 4, 1926. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Vera Mae Mowery; daughter Carol Crawford (John); son Joe Mowery (Betsey); grandchildren, Christi and Cory Crawford and Sarah and Kathleen Mowery; brother, Robert Mowery (Mimi); sister-in-law, Kathleen Brown; and a host of nieces, nephews and other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Cora Mowery, sisters Georgia Lingle Wilson and Patsy Dickerson, brother Jack Mowery and brother-in-law, John Robert Brown.

Jim was raised in Piggott, AR and graduated from Piggott High School. He joined the U.S. Air Force during World War II and was preparing for deployment as a B29 tail gunner in the Pacific Theatre when the war ended. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service, including as Piggott Postmaster, for 36 years prior to his retirement.

He was a long time member of Piggott First United Methodist Church, where his service included positions as Board Chair and Treasurer. Jim was a charter member of Sugar Creek Country Club in Piggott and once served as President.

He was a Past President of the Clay County Democratic Committee and also served as President of the Clay-Greene County Chapter of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was also a member of the Piggott Cemetery Board serving as a multi-decade volunteer at the Piggott 4th of July Picnic, as well as member of the American Legion and past member of the Masonic Lodge.

Jim was respected as a person who loved fiercely, gave generously, lived gracefully, and volunteered cheerfully. He adored spending time with Vera and his family, who he loved having by his side. He beamed with pride in his grandchildren, and told everyone around him about them as often as he could. He also enjoyed playing golf at Sugar Creek, as well as watching golf in person and on tv. He was a devoted fan of the Piggott Mohawks, Arkansas State University and University of Arkansas sports teams. And to his last days, he cherished time spent rooting for his beloved St. Louis Cardinals.

Jim’s family would like to thank everyone at the Piggott Community Hospital, which is a blessing to the wonderful City of Piggott. We would also like to thank all of those who have cared for and assisted Jim and the family in so many ways through the years that he battled cancer.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 8th from 12:00-1:30 p.m. at Hoggard and Sons Funeral Home, and funeral services will be held in the Hoggard and Sons Chapel at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. John Hiegel officiating. Burial will be immediately following the service at Piggott Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Piggott First United Methodist Church (P.O. Box 324, Piggott AR, 72454).
