Obituary

Calvin F. Hoggard Calvin was born August 8, 1936 in Des Arc Arkansas to Grace Maxine Richardson and William Azro Hoggard. He was the youngest of four children and was drug through the cotton fields on his mother's picking sack as a baby and learned early to pick cotton himself. The values of hard work in general, as well as simplicity and thrift were instilled at a young age. He was nick-named "Shrink" when he became sick with colitis as a youngster and lost weight for a time. He walked across a swinging bridge with a broken arm to get to a doctor to have it set after a barn jumping incident. In high school he lived in Cardwell, Missouri and worked at a gas station. There he said he learned the value of telling the truth after putting diesel fuel in a gas tank and admitting it to his boss immediately and being praised for his honesty. Also during high school, he was known for his baseball prowess...to the point that after hitting a ball out of the park and subsequently being seen by the kids in town eating ice cream, the ice cream vendor couldn't keep ice cream in the store. A pair of much younger twin girls also tell the tale that on the school bus every day they would save an empty seat for him just hoping the older handsome athlete would sit beside them – they say he rarely did but that "he was always kind to two girls who just idolized him." Unfortunately his baseball career was cut short after a bunch of high school boys went joy riding with many of them sitting on the back fender of the car - when Calvin fell off he was drug on a gravel road before the screams to stop reached the driver. He was called "Frankenstein" for quite some time after that in school due to his injuries and having to keep his arms out while the skin grew back. He met a girl there that he set his eye on named Janet but when they graduated in 1955, she went off to college and he went off to find work and they lost touch. Calvin eventually went into the army and did take some classes at Arkansas State, where he would meet the love of his life, Letha. He saw her smile at the café where she was waitressing, and showed up that evening to walk her home. The next date was a football game, and the rest, as they say, is history. They were soon married with his brother Gerald and sister-in-law Shirley as witnesses. Calvin and Letha had two children, Pam and Mark, in 1961 and 1962. In the late 60's he followed his brother Billy to Memphis and began a life of work in credit management. He worked for Firestone, then Gordon's, followed by Julius Lewis, and finally First Tennessee Bank. His love of athletics never waned as he supported his children in their sports-related endeavors. He himself enjoyed bowling, fishing, and hiking parts of the Appalachian trail over the years. He played basketball with his grandson Chase until his mid-seventies. He enjoyed biking and rode rural bike trails of up to 20 mile distances throughout his seventies and early eighties. He and Letha enjoyed family gatherings, dominoes and card games, dining out, and traveling. In all they were married just shy of 60 years when she passed in 2019. Calvin lost ground after Letha's passing and eventually his dementia overtook his ability to enjoy life – he passed peacefully in his sleep on October 27, 2021. He was a good son, dad, brother, and grandfather. He will be missed and well remembered. A graveside service will be held Monday, November 1, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at Arlington Cemetery, Arlington, Tennessee.
