Catherine Joan Thompson, 72, of Piggott, Arkansas, passed away February 4, 2016, at the St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro, Arkansas. She was born on September 13, 1943, in Rector, Arkansas, and was the daughter of the late Loyd and Mary Whitaker Vangilder. She was united in marriage to Leroy Thompson on November 25, 1965, and to this union a son was born. Joan retired after 30 years teaching Business at Piggott High School. She was a devout Christian and faithful attendee of the First General Baptist Church in Piggott, Arkansas, and worked with the Tuesday Ladies Ministry and the WINGS food pantry. Survivors include her husband, Leroy Thompson of Piggott, Arkansas; son, Lance Thompson of Rector, Arkansas; granddaughter, Courtney Thompson of Conway, Arkansas; three sisters, Carolyn Linam of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, Sandra Lentz of Marmaduke, Arkansas, Regenia Bettis of Hot Springs, Arkansas; two sisters-in-law, Elanor Toombs of Piggott, Arkansas, and Faye Haney of Weatherford, Texas; brother-in-law, Mike Vowell of Marmaduke, Arkansas; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 7, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. in the Hoggard & Sons Chapel with Chris Brantley officiating. Burial is in Piggott Cemetery in Piggott, Arkansas. Pallbearers are Mike Scott, Connor Rodery, Matthew Vowell, Russell Scott, Michael Lentz, and Charles Toombs. Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home of Piggott, Arkansas, is in charge of the arrangements.
