Obituary

Delbert Gene Blackwell, 51, of Piggott, Arkansas, passed away August 29, 2020, at NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital in Jonesboro, Arkansas. He was born on June 29, 1969, in Memphis, Tennessee, and was the son of Albert and Betty (Wheeler) Blackwell. Gene was united in marriage to Kerri Michelle Cates on December 28, 1998. He was preceded in death by his father, Albert Blackwell; sister, Deanna Smith; maternal grandparents, Earnest and Lela Wheeler; paternal grandfather, Alfred Ardell Blackwell; and paternal grandparents, Herman and Myrtle Holland. Gene served for the United States Army during Desert Storm. He worked at the Piggott Community Hospital as a Lab Tech for 13 years. Gene enjoyed fishing especially loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed attending school trips, livestock shows, and band trips with his girls. He was a member of Piggott Band Boosters and First Baptist Church in Piggott, Arkansas. Survivors include his wife, Kerri Michelle Blackwell of Piggott, Arkansas; mother, Betty Blackwell of Drew, Mississippi; daughters, Madison Blackwell, Taylor Blackwell, Olivia Jene Blackwell all of Piggott, Arkansas; brothers, Eric Blackwell and wife Tamara of Drew, Mississippi, Dean Blackwell and wife Tina of Pocahontas, Arkansas; sisters, Tammy Chappell and husband Troy of Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, Linda Bibb and husband Dale of Lafe, Arkansas; nieces and nephews; his extended family, the Piggott Mohawk Band; and other relatives and friends. Funeral Services will be held Friday, September 4, 2020, at 4:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Piggott, Arkansas, with Bro. Wilburn Griggs officiating and Bro. Rondal Richardson assisting. Burial is in Piggott Cemetery in Piggott, Arkansas. Pallbearers will be Austyn Crow, James Latimer, Connor Austin, Lee Austin, Erich Smith, Bryan Butts, and Charlie Prater. Honorary pallbearers will be Eric Blackwell, Dean Blackwell, Shawnee Latimer, Kalaya Cole, and Piggott Mohawk Band. Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home of Piggott, Arkansas, is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation is Thursday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Piggott, Arkansas.
