Jessica Sue Greene, age 65, joined her parents and brother in heaven this year for Christmas. She peacefully went home to them and to her Lord and Savior on the afternoon of Wednesday, December 22, 2021. She passed gently, with "family" by her side, at Baptist Reynolds Hospice House in Collierville, TN after months-long decline in her cognitive and respiratory abilities. Jessica understood it was Christmas time and she loved the Christmas season. She liked all the red--and especially the green--décor. Anyone that knew Jess for very long at all, knew that green --not surprisingly-- was her favorite color. (So, yes, she really liked St. Patrick's Day too!)
Jessica was born on Tuesday, July 31, 1956, in Paragould, Arkansas. From her early days she faced challenges. Her family, and especially her doting mother, Mary Jesse, rose to these challenges and ensured that Jessica lived a long and incredibly full life despite the obstacles in her path. This was a time when the world was not as understanding and open-minded of disabilities, but under the loving tutelage of her mother, that didn't stand in Jessica's way. She lived fully and had fun most every day.
Jessica was so proud of her father's grocery store. She liked him being "the Baptist grocer" and liked to hang out there with him when she was allowed. She dearly loved her Lord and was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Piggott, Arkansas. She was a member of Girls in Action, ACTeens, several Sunday School classes over the years and she faithfully supported the Lottie Moon Missions campaign. Her favorite pets were Mo, a big brown boxer and Snowball, her fluffy white Persian cat who curled up on the sofa with her at her home on Cherry Street.(Deep down, she was really a cat person though.)She possessed a great sense of humor and had a pretty quick wit about her too. Jessica liked to travel with her family and enjoyed numerous sites across our great nation.
In May 1976, Jessica proudly graduated from Piggott High School. That was a special day, a dream come true for her parents. It was also a special year as it was the bicentennial of our great nation. Jessica delighted in sharing that little tidbit with any and everyone who would listen --she was so happy she graduated in such a special year. Some fifteen years later, in April 1991, then Governor Bill Clinton presented Jessica with a Certificate of Appreciation for her outstanding volunteerism benefiting the Piggott and Clay County community. Her father passed away a year after that special recognition. He was so proud of Jessica and her accomplishments.
She and her mom continued to share lots of adventures over the next twenty years. After the passing of her mother in 2011, she was loved and cared for by the Shanklin Family. Nancy and Bobby Shanklin, along with their only daughter and her family, guaranteed Jessica continued to live a full life. In early spring of 2014, Jessica left Piggott and moved to The Baddour Center, a highly-selective, extraordinary Christian home for adults with special needs, in Senatobia, Mississippi. This is where Jessica truly thrived. She worked, played and lived independently, "dorm-style" with a house mother, alongside her new friends. The Baddour Center opened up many opportunities for Jessica. She graced the runway modeling clothes in a charity Fashion Show in Memphis, TN in 2015. In the Fall of 2016, Jessica was on the Homecoming Court for the Annual Baddour Homecoming Football game. She religiously watched Dancing with the Stars and, as such, loved to dance --and EVERYONE at The Baddour Center knew she did! She was well liked and lovingly given the nickname of "Grandma Greene" because she was so kind and giving to all her friends there. She was quite fond of that title. Jessica spent several years incredibly happy at Baddour. She truly led a joyful life filled with smiles and hugs all while expressing her gratitude.
Jessica was preceded in death by her parents, Earl Bishop Greene and Mary Jesse French Greene, her older brother, Kent Greene, and her grandparents, Matilda and Jesse French, Sallie Bishop Greene and Patrick Albert Greene. She is survived by her guardian and surrogate family, Nancy Shanklin of Piggott, AR, Allison Shanklin McBride and her husband Brian of Germantown, TN, and their two sons, Dr. Andrew McBride of Miami, FL and William McBride of Memphis, TN, and a myriad of family-like friends and caregivers from The Baddour Center in Senatobia, MS.
Her surrogate family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 29th at 1:00 p.m. with the funeral service immediately following and commencing at 2:00p.m. at Hoggard& Sons Funeral Home, 142 North 3rd Avenue, Piggott, AR. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made in memory of Jessica Sue Greene to The Baddour Center, 626 Baddour Blvd, Senatobia, MS 38668 or the First Baptist Church, P.O Box 365, Piggott, AR 72454 (with note: Jessica Greene Memorial).
