Obituary

Jim Duty, 80, of Piggott, Arkansas, passed away November 24, 2018, at the Piggott Community Hospital. He was born January 27, 1938 in Piggott, Arkansas, and was the son of the late William Thomas Duty and Ida Mae Steward. Jim was baptized at St. Francis Baptist Church on August 27, 1950. He began serving as song leader in 1953 at the age of 15, and continued to do so until his death. He was ordained a deacon of the church in 1974 and continued to serve in this role until his death. He graduated Piggott High School in 1956, enlisting in the Army the following August. He was united in marriage to Glenda Sue Brown on April 18, 1959. Jim and Sue raised two boys, Mark Brown of Piggott, and Scott Brown (Tallah) of Piggott, and one girl, Missy Norred (Geoff) of Piggott. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Brooke Smith, Kelsey Woody, Matt Cole, Lauren Brown, Tyler Haygood, Macey Haygood, Archer Rabjohn, Quinn Brown, Sarah Verser; great grandchildren: Mabry, McCoy, Vayda, Amos; numerous nieces and nephews; countless others who they helped raise; brother: Ray Duty (JoAnn) of Piggott. He was preceded in death by: Brothers Edwert Duty and Charles Duty; and sisters Cathline Duty, Kay Skaggs; and his parents. Jim worked at Brown Shoe Company in Piggott from 1957 to 1979. He worked at Piggott Post Office from 1979 to 2000, attending school at the Postal Training Center in Norman, Oklahoma. After retiring from the postal service, he began work at Pumpkin Hollow, where he continued to work through the 2018 season. Jim also served in various community roles through the years including Boy Scouts Leader, youth group leader, church bus driver, and was awarded the first Piggott Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year in 1986. Jim was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 26, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. at the St. Francis Baptist Church in St. Francis, Arkansas, with John Hodges officiating. Burial is in Piggott Cemetery in Piggott, Arkansas. Pallbearers will be Daryn Hickson, Bubba McHaffey, Vance Turner, Mason Mack, Earl McRoberts, Matthew Vancil, Jeff Myers, and Brad Tullos. Honorary pallbearers will be Brian James, Colby Lovelace, Ronnie Cole, Joe Pleasant, Dennis Pleasant, Joe Spinks, Allen Massey, Dennis Duty, Brandon Lovelace, and Larry Massey. Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home of Piggott, Arkansas, is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation is Sunday from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home in Piggott, Arkansas.
