He and his twin sister were born December 30, 1923, in Piggott, Arkansas, the eighth and ninth children of Curtis Richard and Mary Elizabeth (McCormick) Book. He served in the US Army during World War II from 1943 to 1946 and was proud of his service to his country. He married his wife, Betty Jean (New) Book on August 31, 1946, in Pontiac Michigan. He was ordained to the ministry in 1971, and served as pastor and interim pastor for many congregations in Michigan and the Piggott area after he and his wife returned to Arkansas in 1978. He loved singing, playing the piano, and studying history. In 2006, he wrote and published Keeping Memories Afloat, a memoir of his early life and the war years.
