Samuel J. Jones (Sam), 94 of Piggott passed away August 23, 2020 at St. Bernard's Medical Center.
He was born October 15, 1925, west of Bloomfield Missouri, and was the son of the late Bert Jones and Andrea Sorensen Jones.
He was united in marriage to Betty S. Blackwell of Poplar Bluff, Missouri on March 9, 1948, and to this union three children were born, Sammy Jr. Jones of 29 Palms, California, Barbara Sue Jones of Jonesboro, Arkansas and Linda Kay Rainbolt of Palmyra, Virginia.
He is survived by his three children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Sam grew up in Southeast Missouri and entered the Marine Corps during World War II. He saw combat action in three wars, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. He served as a rifleman on Iwo Jima. It was his unit that raised the flag on Mt. Suribache, a picture of this became the most famous picture of WWII.
In Korea he served as a forward observer for an 81MM Mortar Platoon. During this action he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for exposing himself in order to direct fire on the enemy.
He spent a year in Vietnam where he served as the Group Adjutant of the 1st Combined Action Group, however on two occasions he took to the field and served as Acting Company Commander of a Combined Action Company.
His combat medals include the Bronze star, and the Purple Heart medal for wounds he received in Korea. He also was an excellent pistol shooter and earned the Distinguished Pistol shooters medal. He retired on May 31, 1974 as a Chief Warrant Officer W4 having served almost 30 years as a U.S. Marine and moved to the Piggott area.
In 1982 he was elected President of the Sugar Creek Country Club. He served twelve years in this position. He was a member of the Campbell, Missouri Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 26, 2020, at 2:00 p.m at Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home in Piggott, Arkansas, with Brett Randall officiating. Burial is in New Hope Cemetery in Pollard, Arkansas. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 25 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home. Hoggard & Sons Funeral Home in Piggott, Arkansas, is in charge of the arrangements.
