Shirley Sue Howard, 78, of Piggott, Arkansas, lost her short battle with cancer on March 1, 2022, at Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. She had fought the fight of her life with her will power and head strong attitude.
Shirley entered the world on January 23, 1944, in Leonard, Arkansas, and was the last child born to Orville and Ada (Nicely) Ellis. When she became an adult, Shirley went out to face the world and start her own life.
She raised two boys, Byron Scott Abney and Donald Eugene Howard, Jr. Shirley worked as a waitress and seamstress, and later worked with an Armed Security Company where she was promoted Sergeant in a very short time. Throughout her life, she did what it took to provide for her family. She moved all over the United States over the years. Shirley settled back in Clay County, Arkansas for the last 13 years where she worked at Excel Custom Framing. Her co-workers saw Shirley enjoyed her work and would take the time to teach others her trade.
Shirley loved her family and friends. She was one person who let you know where she stood. She would crack the whip on you and turn around and hug your neck.
Shirley is survived by her son, Donald Eugene Howard, Jr. and wife Billie of Paris, Texas; three grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; sister, Vergie Riggs of Saint Mary's, Ohio; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Byron Abney; her brothers, J.D. Ellis and Hubert Ellis; and her sister, Vercie Roberts.
And a very special thank you to Jim and Mary Lynn Householder.
