Obituary

Shirley Joan Johnson was born January 9, 1947, in Rock Rapids, Iowa to Henry and Susie (Smidstra) Kelderman. She grew up in Doon, IA, Canton, SD, and Hardwick, MN. After her father's death, her family moved to Luverne, MN. On June 2, 1964, she married Jerry Johnson from Pollard, Arkansas. They were the first couple to be wed at the Wayside Chapel north of Luverne. They made their home in Luverne, and later in Sioux Falls, SD, Harrisburg, SD, and Valley Springs, SD beforesettling in Hills, MN, where they have been residents for many years. Shirley worked as a janitor at Hills-Beaver Creek High School, at the Tuff Memorial Home in Hills, at the Minnesota Veterans' Home in Luverne, and at Tuff Village and also worked many years as a CNA. Shirley and Jerry used to sing in churches and at the Union Gospel Mission in Sioux Falls. She previously was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Hills, and Christ Lutheran Church, Alvord, IA. She later became a member of Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church of Sioux Falls. Shirley enjoyed potted flowers, rummage sales, making rhubarb dessert, dining out, meeting for dinner and card games with friends Dave and Barb, and time spent with family, especially in later years. Faith carried Shirley through loss, hardship, and illness. Church was her happy place. She enjoyed attending Saturday night vespers and then going out to eat afterwards. In 2024, Shirley and Jerry celebrated 60 years of marriage. Shirley's final health battle began many miles from home while visiting family. She reposed in the Lord at 79 years of age on June 26, 2026, in Piggott, Arkansas, while under the care of her son and Legacy Hospice. Surviving are her husband, Jerry; daughter Corilee (Jason) Boer; daughter Angie (Bob) Johnson; son Jeffery Johnson; grandkids Amanda (Jordon), Lana (Steve), Rebecca (Trevor), Derek, Bret, and Amara (Mitch); great-grandkids Nieva, Indy, Sarah, Tamiya, Ezekiel, Isaac, and Rosalia; brother Dave (Jan) Kelderman; brothers and sisters-in-law Linda Elkins, Lon "Sonny" Johnson, Eithel Webb, Janice Rodery, Gloria Kelderman, and Colleen Kelderman; and extended family.
